A Small Product Inspired by a Personal Problem
Sometimes innovation begins with very small everyday frustrations. The idea for the Biochar Air Freshener started from a simple observation at home. The founder’s mother frequently asked to buy ordinary air fresheners available in the market, but most options were disposable, non reusable, short lasting, and heavily chemical based. At the same time, while working deeply in the biochar and carbon removal space, we realized biochar itself has strong odor absorption and moisture control properties. This led us to ask a simple question:
What if we could turn biochar into a reusable, climate friendly, and aesthetically pleasing air freshener?
At Aptech Lab, we are now exploring the development of Biochar Air Fresheners as a sustainable lifestyle product that combines functionality, circular economy, and environmental innovation.
Why We Are Doing This
There are very limited eco friendly and reusable air freshener options currently available in Nepal. Most products are plastic heavy, chemical based, disposable, and imported. This initiative is also part of a larger vision to demonstrate that climate solutions do not only belong in laboratories or industrial systems. They can become part of everyday life and consumer behavior.By using biochar derived from biomass waste, the product also supports waste utilization and climate positive innovation.
Methodology
- Research on biochar based odor absorption properties
- Testing different biochar materials and product forms
- Product prototyping and design exploration
- Combining functionality with simple aesthetic design
- Pilot testing for homes, vehicles, offices, and storage spaces
Who Is This For?
- Households
- Offices and workspaces
- Vehicles and travel spaces
- Eco conscious consumers
- Sustainable lifestyle and gifting markets
Current Status and Timeline
The project is currently in the concept and early prototyping phase. Initial testing and design exploration are underway to identify suitable materials, durability, usability, and local production possibilities.
