Built For NepalBuilt To Last

Appropriate Technology Lab (Aptech Lab) is a Nepal-based, women-led climate organization and social enterprise. We connect global climate science with local realities across land, water, waste, and clean energy, and put proven solutions to work on the ground. We train local stewards and ensure every system stays self-sustaining long after the initial rollout.

We believe true climate resilience starts in the soil, in schools, and in communities where environmental risk is lived every day.

What We Work On

Since 2024, we have been running community biochar production projects across Nepal. Biochar is a high-carbon material produced by heating agricultural and forestry waste in a controlled process called pyrolysis. Instead of letting crop waste burn in open fields or rot and release greenhouse gases, biochar locks carbon into the soil for hundreds of years, improves water retention, and boosts crop yields. We also work on industrial fuel efficiency and the development of biochar-based agricultural products.

We built Nepal's first bilingual carbon footprint calculator, designed around Nepali lifestyles. It helps people estimate emissions from travel, energy, food, and daily consumption, and identify practical reduction steps. Alongside this, we run climate literacy campaigns through community workshops, school programs, and corporate sustainability initiatives, with a goal of reaching 30,000 climate-conscious Nepalis by 2027.

We also work on carbon credit measurement, reporting, and verification frameworks, and have brought together over 40 founding organizations into a climate alliance committed to collective climate action across Nepal.
